School Start Times Update

Dear Robbinsdale Area Schools Families,

For the past several years, members of the School Board have discussed whether or not the District should consider changing the school start times. They have explored both the benefits of a shift and the impact it could have on students, families and staff.

The primary goal was to move high schools to a later start time without incurring additional transportation costs.

During Monday’s School Board meeting, the Board voted 5-2 to change school start times. There has not been a decision about which school year this will begin.

A list of projected times for each school can be found on the district website. In general, new school start and end times will be:

  • Elementary - 7:45 a.m. to 2:05 p.m.
  • High school - 8:35 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
  • Middle school - 9:20 a.m. to 4:05 p.m.

We are developing a School Start Time Steering Committee that will lead the work through a subcommittee process. Once we return from winter break, the subcommittee groups will begin discussions and gather feedback on the work ahead of us.

Please know the Board was engaged in a comprehensive process to reach the start time decision. Surveys were sent to families, secondary students and staff; ‘World Cafe’ community discussions were held; an advisory committee was formed; and student voice was heard - including that of SABE (Student Advisory to the Board of Education).

This change aligns with the Board’s goals - and brings a potential annual savings of more than $75,000 in transportation costs. The District also received approval from the School Board last night to get quotes for transportation services - once this process is complete, the District and Board will decide in the spring when the new start times will begin.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we strive to meet the social-emotional needs of our students with a commitment to academic excellence for all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephanie Burrage
Interim Superintendent

  • Primaria - 7:45 a.m. a 2:05 p.m.
  • Preparatoria - 8:35 a.m. a 3:25 p.m.
  • Intermedia - 9:20 a.m. a 4:05 p.m.

Atentamente,

Dra. Stephanie Burrage
Superintendenta interina
